Lao Kar Ki Si Loh!

That's what Caleb said to me tonight. Just in case you are wondering what it means, its literal translation is "downstairs very angry" in Hokkien. Grandma and Grandpa who comes often to play with Caleb, would sometimes speak Hokkien to him to expose him to our dialect.
And during one of those nights when they came over to play with him, apparently Caleb was making a lot of noise and that's what Grandma said in Hokkien. I think she meant to tell Caleb that the people downstairs are very angry coz he's making so much noise. And Caleb immediately repeated after her and said "Lao Kar Ki Si Loh!" Obviously he got Grandma and Grandpa very tickled and that helped him to remember the phrase.
Anyway, I was reading to Caleb before his bedtime tonight and all of a sudden he said to me "Mummy, why are you reading so loudly?" And then he added, "Lao kar ki si loh!"

I was really amused but glad that my son is picking up some dialect. Well, "lao kar ki si loh" is not the only Hokkien that he knows. He knows at least 3 other hokkien words, though they sound a bit uncouth. He understands and can say "Pi Sai" (nose shit), "Buck Sai" (Eye shit) and "Hee Sai" (Ear shit). Yah, told you his Hokkien volcabulary is a bit uncouth at the moment. But it's okay lah, he's a boy what!
