Waterplay @ Sembawang Shopping Centre

A couple of months ago, Yeeyee discovered what she thought was a hidden gem for kids at Sembawang Shopping Centre. At this shopping centre, on level 3, there is a  designated waterplay area called "Splash Park". It comprises of a dry playground with slides and swings that cater to different ages and next to it, a waterplay area with sprinklers, fountains, water guns and water buckets. It's definitely a place where the kids will get excited about when they see it.
Me and Yeeyee quite liked the place when we first discovered it because firstly, it's free entertainment for the kids. They get to work out their energies and don't need us to entertain them. The place is not crowded at all even on weekends so we do not have to worry about fighting the crowds. There's a Hong Kong cafe right next to the dry playground so we could send the kids to the playground to play on their own while we just sit in the cafe, eating and drinking (as though we were tai tais... yes, it's nice to dream about it...) and glance at the kids occasionally. On top of that, they have very family friendly facilities. The one that impressed me the most was the toilet. Other than the usual common toilet (which had hand dryers attached to every other sink), there was also a toilet just for families. It's a standalone toilet which is very spacious. There's enough space for you to wheel your stroller in. There's a changing table for toddlers as well as a child seat that's attached to the wall. The child seat allows you to strap your toddler in if you need to use the toilet. There's a urinal for little boys, a small toilet bowl for little children as well as an adult size one - all in one big cubicle. For people like me, with three young kids, this is really very helpful. I was so impressed with the toilet that I wanted to take photos of it but unfortunately, my camera ran out of battery.

Anyway, the kids love the place and they had a lot of fun there.

Getting changed and all ready to go play with water!

This is actually taken in the HongKong cafe. Me and Yeeyee shamelessly plonked ourselves at a very nice booth seat, ordered a drink and a dessert to share and then sat there for hours with our bags and all the kids' barang barang. We even changed the kids there! But like I said, the place is not crowded at all so the staff left us alone.

We've been here twice. These photos were taken during our first visit.

The kids really had tons of fun here. With so many plus points, you would think this is one place we'll come often. Unfortunately this is not so. Even though the kids enjoyed themselves very much, we wouldn't be bringing them back there to play anymore.

Well, when we first went there to do waterplay, after we were done, I was changing the kids and realised that the water that is being used at the Splash Park is really smelly. The water left a stench on the kid's clothes and I had a really had time washing the kids' hair. I think I washed Caleb's hair like 3 times before I could get the smell out.

After our first visit there, Nic came down with a viral fever after that so we didn't go back again for a while.

Then in Dec, me and Yeeyee ran out of ideas on where to bring the kids and we remembered this place so we brought the kids back here again. Again the kids had great fun and while they were playing away, it was pretty relaxing for us Mummies too. However, after the kids were done with the waterplay, again we had to deal with the smelly water stench. And then the ultimate thing happened. The night after we brought the kids to the Splash Park, Nic came down with high fever, a bad throat and a runny nose. After that, it was Caleb's turn, then Sarah and then Nevan. So out of 5 kids, only Nat was spared. All the rest of the kids came down with the same symptoms for a week. That was when Yeeyee remembered that out of the 3 times that she's brought her kids to the Splash Park, Nic fell sick twice. That's more than a 50% hit rate. As more us, well, out of 2 visits, the kids fell sick once.

Me and Yeeyee concluded that the water's probably not very clean and if some kid out there is sick and playing at the park, it's very easy for the other kids to catch the virus. And subsequently Yeeyee heard from a couple of friends that such water parks are the most lethal places to catch viruses.

So, even though we all had fun at Sembawang Shopping Centre, this is really probably the last time we're bringing the kids there to play.
