A Boy's Need For Modesty

Yesterday after Caleb came home from school, I wanted to change him out of his long pants and let him wear shorts so that it'll be more cooling for him. I picked out this pair of shorts for him coz I thought it looks "airy" and would be comfortable for him.


And this is how he reacted when he saw the shorts...

Caleb: NO, I don't want to wear this one!
Mummy: Why Caleb? It's more cooling. This one is nice.
Caleb: No! This one got holes! See! (Takes the shorts from me and shows me the holes... Yah, like I can't see the holes like that??!!)
Mummy: No... it's meant to be like that. That's the design of the shorts. It's nice!
Caleb: No! Got holes! (Now he's starting to sound more upset and exasperated with me...)
Mummy: But Caleb, it's ok to have the holes there...
Caleb: No Mummy! (Now he's sounding REALLY upset and frowning) Later I wear this one got holes and people see already, they will laugh at me and say shame shame!

I couldn't help but laugh out loud when he said that. Wah, my son IS GROWING UP. I didn't realise that he's actually self conscious about people looking at him. Talk about modesty man. Ok lah, say this kind of thing to me how to reject him right? Of course I immediately said "oh ok, then we choose another one to wear ok?" I guess it's time for me as his Mummy to start respecting his need for modesty.
