This afternoon, just after the kids woke up from their nap, Caleb lay at the edge of his bed just "nuaing" away. I was beside him ironing clothes and then, Sarah appears in the room, holding a small plastic spoon from our toy kitchen set. Her face lit up when she saw Caleb and she happily walked up to him and very cheekily started using the spoon to knock his head. Caleb, having just woken up from his nap was feeling pretty grouchy, started whinning away and crying out to me for help. So this was the little conversation that we had...
Caleb: (whinny voice) Mummy, help! Mummy, look at Meimei! She's hitting me! Help Mummy! (Whine, whine, whine... and using hands to shield Sarah's knocks)
Mummy: (stern voice) Sarah! Stop hitting Kor Kor!
Sarah: (grin, grin, grin....oblivious to Mummy and continues knocking Caleb's head)
So as not to agitate the boy, I grabbed Sarah and pulled her away from Caleb.
Well, I've mentioned before that this girl has a persistent character, so obviously it didn't quite work coz she simply walked back to Caleb with a bigger grin on her face and repeated her antics of knocking his head with her spoon. That triggered another round of Caleb's whinning and cries for help and I gave Sarah a stern warning that if she continues disturbing her Kor Kor, I'll confiscate the spoon.
I then told Caleb that perhaps he should not sleep at the edge of the bed but shift himself in so that Sarah can't reach him and he wouldn't get hit by her. But he was getting really grouchy and refused to listen or move. Just whine, whine, whine about how Sarah's irritating him. Sarah, enjoying the big time reaction that she was getting from her Kor Kor, again moved in to knock his head. So, I had to confiscate the spoon and keep things under control. I shooed her out of the room and told her to go outside to play.
When Sarah left the room, I gave Caleb a little pep talk...
Mummy: Caleb, you know, Mummy can't be around to protect you all the time. If Meimei tries to hit you, why don't you just shift yourself in. If she can't reach you, she can't hit you right? What if she comes in with another spoon? Are you going to let her hit you again? I've already told you what to do, if she tries to hit you again, don't come to me for help. I'm busy ironing clothes.
(Sounds heartless of me to say that to my son? Well, this boy needs a little pushing at times so...)
Anyway, true to my prediction, my dear girl, once again appeared at the entrance of the room, with a super big grin on her face, another spoon that she went to dig out, and headed straight to Caleb to knock his head. Thankfully, what I said went into the boy's head and he shifted himself away from the edge of the bed so that she couldn't reach him. Then he giggled and said," Ha, Meimei cannot reach me!" The girl? Well, she just laughed and tried tugging at the other beddings on the bed to try to reach the boy.
So, what do you call this? The tables have been turned? The tides have changed? Whatever... I just didn't expect it to happen so soon... and I think, I can start expecting more to come...
The Cheeky One...
